Za posledných 10 až 15 rokov je berberinu venovaná mimoriadna pozornosť zo strany biomedicíny. V rade štúdií bolo preukázané, že berberin vykazuje širokú škálu biologických aktivít a že jeho farmakologické účinky sú v súlade s jeho využitím v ľudovom liečiteľstve. Možnosti jeho využitia v modernej medicíne sú najmä v boji s bakteriálnymi hnačkami (Chen et al., 2014b), cukrovkou 2. typu (Han et al., 2011; Li et al., 2014), hypercholesterolémiou (Wang et al., 2014b), rôznymi zápalmi bakteriálneho a infekčného pôvodu (Chen et al., 2014a; Zhang et al., 2014), chorobami srdca (Lau et al., 2001) a neurodegeneratívnymi chorobami (Chen et al., 2014a ; Jiang et al., 2015).

Experimentálne bola preukázaná schopnosť berberinu potlačovať rast nádorových buniek pri rakovine pŕs (Tan et al., 2014; Xie et al., 2015), prostaty (Wang et al., 2012; Lu et al., 2015), slinivky brušnej (Leng et al., 2004) či leukémii (Liu et al., 2012).
